About Mister Chimney
A Family Chimney Company Serving Missouri Since 1998
Built around the work that protects a home.
Mister Chimney started in 1998 with a used white van, two chimney brushes, a ladder, an industrial vacuum, and a simple belief: chimney and fireplace work deserves real specialization. Nearly three decades later, it’s still a family business across St. Louis and Kansas City — and still personal.
The beginning
One van, two brushes, and a decision to specialize
Before starting the company, Michael “Mike” Sullivan worked in chimney and fireplace service through the early 1990s. He kept seeing the same thing: homeowners had trouble finding someone who truly understood their chimney system. Too often it was treated as just another handyman task — even though the condition of a chimney, flue, fireplace, and masonry can affect how a home is used and maintained.
So in 1998, Mike decided to build a company focused on that work alone. In the early days, Mister Chimney handled mostly chimney cleaning and basic inspection. Mike completed much of the work himself, while his wife, Laura, answered calls and scheduled appointments in the evenings.
As homeowners began referring friends and neighbors, the company grew naturally — first into repair work, then into masonry, chimney caps, crowns, flashing, fireplace repair, and more involved chimney solutions. We have stayed focused on chimneys and fireplaces ever since. We are not a general remodeling company that occasionally works on a chimney — this is the work we have built our name around.
A family business, still personal
Mike, Daniel, and a team of eleven
Today, Mister Chimney remains family-owned. Mike still stays involved, especially on complex projects and with many long-time customers. His son, Daniel Sullivan, now leads the day-to-day operation as Operations Manager.
Daniel didn’t begin behind a desk. When he was younger, he worked alongside Mike during summers — carrying equipment, laying protective floor coverings, and cleaning the work area at the end of the job. Over time he learned inspections, repairs, job coordination, and the practical details that keep a service visit organized from start to finish.
The company is now supported by a team of 11 — field technicians, masonry and repair specialists, and office staff who help keep customers informed and appointments coordinated. Even as the team has grown, the goal has stayed the same: treat people’s homes with care, explain the condition clearly, and recommend work that makes sense.
Our approach to every visit
We believe in showing people what we see
A chimney issue can be hard to understand from the ground. A homeowner may notice a leak, a draft problem, loose masonry, an odor, or simply know it has been a while since the system was inspected. When we find a condition that’s difficult to view from the ground or inside the fireplace, we document it and explain it in plain language. We talk through what appears urgent, what may be monitored, and what options are available before work begins.
When a repair can be completed safely and correctly, we don’t automatically recommend replacement. We also don’t begin additional work without explaining why it’s needed and receiving your approval. Our team uses floor protection and takes extra care around the fireplace area, and for significant work we keep records so returning customers have a clearer history of their chimney and fireplace system over time.
“Show people what you see, explain their options, and let them make the decision.”
— Mike Sullivan, founder
One visit that still represents our values
A routine cleaning that turned into the right call
A family contacted Mister Chimney after moving into an older home. They expected a routine chimney cleaning before winter. During the inspection, our technician found cracking and damaged areas around the flue and chimney crown. Instead of immediately beginning work, the team documented the conditions and showed the homeowners what had been found.
Some of the system could be repaired, so a full rebuild wasn’t necessary. We completed the needed chimney and crown repairs, addressed the damaged areas, and then cleaned the chimney. Years later, that same family was still using Mister Chimney for periodic inspection and maintenance — and had referred two neighbors to us. That kind of relationship matters to us more than making one quick sale.
