Chimney Cap Installation & Repair

A chimney cap is the metal cover over the top of the flue. A good one keeps rain out of the flue, stops birds and animals from nesting inside, blocks leaves and debris, and its spark screen helps contain embers. It is a small component that prevents several of the most common and avoidable chimney problems.

What a cap does, and what happens without one

Without a cap, rain falls straight down the flue, rusting the damper and soaking the smoke chamber and firebox from inside. Animals treat an open flue as a ready-made cavity and build nests that block draft and create a fire hazard. Windblown debris collects, and embers can leave the top unscreened. A cap addresses all of those at once.

It is one of the least expensive parts of a chimney and one of the most cost-effective to keep in good order.

Installation and repair

Caps come in single-flue and multi-flue styles and in materials from galvanized steel to stainless and copper. The right cap fits the flue properly, has an adequate screen, and is secured to withstand wind. We size and fit the correct cap for your flue, and where an existing cap is rusted, dented, dislodged, or missing its screen, we repair or replace it.

A cap that does not fit or is not fastened well can blow off or restrict draft, so fit and attachment matter as much as the cap itself.

How a cap fits into the bigger picture

A cap protects the flue, but it does not stop water entering through a cracked crown, failed flashing, or porous brick. When we install a cap we also note the condition of the crown and masonry, because keeping water out of a chimney usually takes more than one component doing its job.

Signs you need a cap or cap repair

  • Rain, moisture, or a rusted damper inside the flue
  • Animals, nesting, or scratching sounds in the chimney
  • Leaves and debris collecting in the flue
  • A cap that is rusted, dented, or has shifted
  • A missing or torn spark screen
  • No cap on the flue at all

Cap installation and repair includes

  • Sizing the correct single- or multi-flue cap
  • Choosing a suitable material (galvanized, stainless, copper)
  • Fitting an adequate spark and animal screen
  • Securing the cap against wind
  • Replacing a rusted, damaged, or dislodged cap
  • Noting the crown and masonry condition

Serving St. Louis & Kansas City

We provide chimney cap installation & repair across both of our home regions โ€” the St. Louis metro, including the Metro East communities in Illinois, and the Kansas City metro on both the Missouri and Kansas sides โ€” generally within about 65 miles of each city. Wherever you are, the approach is the same: we look at the actual system on site, explain what we find in plain terms, and lay out the options before any work begins. We use cautious, honest language about what we can and can't determine, and we don't quote a price or promise a fix for a problem we haven't assessed in person. Each metro has its own direct phone number, so you always reach the right place, and we're available around the clock to take your call and get you on the schedule.

The right component depends on your flue arrangement and chimney type, the material best suited to your exposure, and whether related parts such as the crown, chase cover, or screen also need attention.

Keeping ahead of it

This is one of the higher-value, lower-cost parts of a chimney to keep in good order. A properly fitted cap or cover prevents the water intrusion, animal entry, and debris that cause bigger, more expensive problems, so it's worth checking its condition as part of a yearly look at the system.

Questions

Chimney Cap Installation & Repair FAQs

How do I know if I need a new cap?

Rust, dents, a missing or damaged screen, a cap that has shifted or blown partly off, or no cap at all are all reasons to replace. Animal or debris entry is a common giveaway.

Will a cap stop birds and squirrels getting in?

A properly fitted cap with an intact screen keeps animals out of the flue. If animals are already inside, removal comes first, then the cap prevents re-entry.

What are caps made of?

Common materials are galvanized steel, stainless steel, and copper. Stainless and copper resist corrosion longer; we help match the cap to your flue and exposure.
