Level 3 Chimney Inspection

A Level 3 inspection is uncommon and specific. It is used when a serious hidden hazard is suspected and confirming or ruling it out requires access to concealed areas, which can mean removing or opening part of the chimney, wall, or ceiling. It is not a routine service and is only recommended when the situation genuinely warrants it.

When a Level 3 becomes necessary

A Level 3 is considered when a Level 1 or Level 2 uncovers, or strongly suggests, a hazard that cannot be evaluated without getting behind a concealed surface. Examples include suspected damage inside a chimney's structure after a serious chimney fire, or a hidden condition implicated in a leak or a draft failure that the accessible inspection could not resolve.

Because it can involve construction access, a Level 3 is approached carefully, with the scope explained first and limited to what is needed to answer the specific question.

What it involves

A Level 3 includes the elements of Levels 1 and 2, plus removal or opening of components or portions of the structure where necessary to reach the area in question. What gets opened depends entirely on where the suspected problem is and how the chimney is built.

We define the necessary access for your property, describe the likely restoration involved, and proceed only with your understanding of the scope.

Why it is handled conservatively

Opening a structure is not something to do lightly. We recommend a Level 3 only when the potential hazard justifies it and a less invasive inspection cannot give a reliable answer. Any related code or permit requirements are determined for the specific property and work involved.

A Level 3 is considered when

  • A hidden hazard is suspected but cannot be reached otherwise
  • A Level 1 or 2 strongly suggests concealed damage
  • Serious internal damage is suspected after a chimney fire
  • A leak or draft failure can't be resolved by accessible inspection
  • Confirming or ruling out a hazard requires opening the structure

A Level 3 involves

  • The elements of a Level 1 and Level 2
  • Access to concealed areas that may require removing components
  • Opening portions of the chimney, wall, or ceiling where necessary
  • A scope limited to reaching the specific area in question
  • Restoration of what was opened, explained in advance
  • Any permit or code requirements determined for the property

Serving St. Louis & Kansas City

We provide level 3 chimney inspection across both of our home regions — the St. Louis metro, including the Metro East communities in Illinois, and the Kansas City metro on both the Missouri and Kansas sides — generally within about 65 miles of each city. Wherever you are, the approach is the same: we look at the actual system on site, explain what we find in plain terms, and lay out the options before any work begins. We use cautious, honest language about what we can and can't determine, and we don't quote a price or promise a fix for a problem we haven't assessed in person. Each metro has its own direct phone number, so you always reach the right place, and we're available around the clock to take your call and get you on the schedule.

The right depth of inspection depends on why you are looking: an unchanged system in steady use, a home sale, a post-event check, or a change of appliance or fuel each point to a different level, and access to the chimney affects what can be reached.

Keeping ahead of it

An inspection is most useful as a routine, not a reaction. Having the system looked at each year — and stepping up to a fuller inspection when you're buying, selling, changing the setup, or after an event — gives you a documented starting point and keeps you from discovering a problem at the worst possible time.

Questions

Level 3 Chimney Inspection FAQs

Will a Level 3 damage my chimney or home?

It involves controlled access to a concealed area and the restoration that follows. We limit the opening to what is needed and explain the scope, including restoration, before starting.

How do I know if I actually need one?

A Level 3 follows from findings in a Level 1 or 2, or a strong suspicion of a concealed hazard. It is not something to request blindly; the earlier inspection points to whether it is warranted.

Are permits involved?

Any permit or code requirements depend on the property and the extent of access. We determine what applies for your situation rather than assuming.

Do you service both St. Louis and Kansas City?
