Level 1 Chimney Inspection

A Level 1 inspection is the baseline check for a chimney and venting system that is being used the same way it always has, with no known problems. If your fireplace or appliance has not changed and nothing unusual has happened, this is normally the right yearly inspection.

What a Level 1 covers

A Level 1 inspection reviews the readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior and the accessible parts of the appliance and its connection. We look at the firebox and accessible flue, check for soot and creosote accumulation and obvious obstructions, and confirm the basic structure and connections appear intact and clear.

The emphasis is on what can be reached and seen without special tools or dismantling anything. It is a practical, proportionate check for a system in steady service.

When a Level 1 is the right choice

Choose a Level 1 when you burn the same fuel in the same appliance you always have, you have no reason to suspect a hidden issue, and you are not buying, selling, or changing the system. It satisfies the widely recommended yearly inspection for an unchanged chimney.

If any of those conditions do not hold, a more thorough look is the safer route, and we will tell you when that is the case.

When we would recommend stepping up

If we see signs during a Level 1 that the flue interior needs a closer look, or if you mention a draft problem, a leak, an odor, or a recent event, we may recommend moving to a video scan or a Level 2. We do not upsell for its own sake, but we also will not describe parts we could not properly see as verified.

A Level 1 fits when

  • The system is in continued service under the same conditions
  • You burn the same fuel in the same appliance as before
  • There is no known problem or recent event
  • You are not buying, selling, or changing the system
  • You want the recommended annual check
  • Nothing unusual has changed since the last visit

A Level 1 reviews

  • Readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior
  • Accessible parts of the appliance and its connection
  • The firebox and accessible flue
  • Soot and creosote accumulation
  • Obvious obstructions or damage
  • Whether the basic structure and connections appear intact

Serving St. Louis & Kansas City

We provide level 1 chimney inspection across both of our home regions — the St. Louis metro, including the Metro East communities in Illinois, and the Kansas City metro on both the Missouri and Kansas sides — generally within about 65 miles of each city. Wherever you are, the approach is the same: we look at the actual system on site, explain what we find in plain terms, and lay out the options before any work begins. We use cautious, honest language about what we can and can't determine, and we don't quote a price or promise a fix for a problem we haven't assessed in person. Each metro has its own direct phone number, so you always reach the right place, and we're available around the clock to take your call and get you on the schedule.

The right depth of inspection depends on why you are looking: an unchanged system in steady use, a home sale, a post-event check, or a change of appliance or fuel each point to a different level, and access to the chimney affects what can be reached.

Keeping ahead of it

An inspection is most useful as a routine, not a reaction. Having the system looked at each year — and stepping up to a fuller inspection when you're buying, selling, changing the setup, or after an event — gives you a documented starting point and keeps you from discovering a problem at the worst possible time.

Questions

Level 1 Chimney Inspection FAQs

Is a Level 1 enough before I sell my house?

A home sale is one of the situations that generally calls for a Level 2, which is more thorough and includes an interior flue scan. We can advise based on your specific sale.

How long does it take?

A straightforward Level 1 on a single system is usually completed in a single visit. Access and how many flues are present affect the time.

Does a Level 1 include cleaning?

Inspection and cleaning are separate services, though they are frequently scheduled together because a clean flue is easier to assess accurately.

Do you service both St. Louis and Kansas City?

Yes. This is one of the services we provide across both the St. Louis and Kansas City metro areas, each with its own direct phone number. Call the number for your area and we'll take it from there.
