Top-Sealing Damper Installation

A top-sealing damper mounts at the top of the flue and closes with a gasketed lid, unlike a traditional throat damper down at the firebox. Because it seals at the very top with a rubber gasket, it closes far more tightly, which cuts the year-round air leakage a worn throat damper allows and also helps keep rain and animals out.

How it differs from a throat damper

A throat damper is a metal plate at the top of the firebox; even when new it seals metal-to-metal, and once it rusts it seals poorly. A top-sealing damper sits at the top of the flue and closes with a gasket, so it seals the whole flue like a lid on a jar. When it is open, the fireplace works normally; when closed, it keeps conditioned air in and weather out.

It is operated by a cable that runs down into the firebox, so you control it from inside.

Why homeowners choose one

The main draw is a tighter seal. A fireplace with a leaky throat damper is an open hole to the outside for most of the year. A top-sealing damper reduces that loss noticeably, and because it caps the flue when closed, it doubles as protection against rain and animal entry. It is a practical upgrade for a chimney with a failed throat damper or no working damper at all.

It is especially worth considering when the existing damper is rusted out and a cap is also needed, since one component then does more than one job.

Fitting it correctly

A top-sealing damper has to be sized and mounted to the flue and its cable routed and adjusted so it opens and closes reliably. We confirm the flue is a suitable candidate and fit the unit so it seals properly. As with any component, we note the condition of the surrounding crown and masonry, since the damper cannot compensate for water entering elsewhere.

A top-sealing damper suits you if

  • Your throat damper is rusted or won't seal
  • You have no working damper
  • You want to cut year-round air leakage
  • You'd like added rain and animal protection
  • You're already addressing a missing cap
  • You want a tighter close than metal-to-metal

Installation includes

  • Sizing the damper to the flue
  • Mounting the gasketed lid at the top of the flue
  • Routing and adjusting the control cable to the firebox
  • Confirming reliable open and close operation
  • Checking the flue is a suitable candidate
  • Noting crown and masonry condition

Serving St. Louis & Kansas City

We provide top-sealing damper installation across both of our home regions โ€” the St. Louis metro, including the Metro East communities in Illinois, and the Kansas City metro on both the Missouri and Kansas sides โ€” generally within about 65 miles of each city. Wherever you are, the approach is the same: we look at the actual system on site, explain what we find in plain terms, and lay out the options before any work begins. We use cautious, honest language about what we can and can't determine, and we don't quote a price or promise a fix for a problem we haven't assessed in person. Each metro has its own direct phone number, so you always reach the right place, and we're available around the clock to take your call and get you on the schedule.

The scope of a repair depends on what has actually failed and how far the damage extends, how the chimney is built and how easily it can be accessed, and whether water has been getting in long enough to affect more than the visible area.

Keeping ahead of it

Repairs tend to be smaller when they're caught early. A minor crown crack, a bit of open joint, or a slightly rusted cap is far more contained than the spalled brick, interior leaks, and larger rebuilds that follow seasons of unaddressed water. A yearly look is the reliable way to catch these while they're small.

Questions

Top-Sealing Damper Installation FAQs

Is a top-sealing damper better than a regular one?

For sealing, generally yes. It closes with a gasket at the top of the flue, which seals far more tightly than a metal throat damper and also helps block rain and animals.

How do I operate it?

A cable runs from the damper down into the firebox, so you open and close it from inside the fireplace without going on the roof.

Does it replace a chimney cap?

When closed it covers the flue, but a cap protects the flue whenever you are using the fireplace and the damper is open. We advise on what your chimney needs.

Do you service both St. Louis and Kansas City?
