From a Used White Van to a Family Chimney Company

Early-style white chimney service van representing Mister Chimney’s 1998 beginning.

Mister Chimney began in 1998 with a used white van, basic chimney tools, and a simple idea: chimney and fireplace work deserves real attention from people who understand the system.

Before starting the company, I had already seen how often homeowners were left trying to make sense of a problem from the ground. A chimney leak could look like a roof leak. A smoky fireplace could be blamed on the wood without anyone checking the damper, flue, or smoke chamber. Loose masonry might be patched without asking why water was reaching it in the first place.

I wanted Mister Chimney to be built around the work itself—cleaning, inspections, repairs, masonry, caps, crowns, flashing, fireplaces, and the related questions that come with a weather-exposed system. We were never meant to be a general remodeling company that happened to work on chimneys when something else was slow.

The early work built the standard

In the beginning, the work was largely cleaning and basic inspection. Every visit made the same lesson clearer: homeowners do not need a dramatic sales pitch. They need someone to look carefully, explain what can be seen, and tell them what options make sense.

As the company grew, so did the range of work. Customers needed help with water entry, damaged crowns and caps, flashing, mortar, liners, fireplace repairs, stoves, and more involved condition questions. The service list expanded because the work required it, not because we wanted to sell every possible home service.

A family company stays personal

Today, Mister Chimney remains family-owned. My son, Daniel Sullivan, is our Operations Manager. Daniel learned the work alongside me in the field before taking on the day-to-day responsibility of keeping visits organized and customers informed.

Our team has grown, but the standard has not changed. A homeowner should know what we are looking at, why it matters, and what happens next. We protect the home while we work, explain the condition without hiding behind jargon, and do not push replacement when a repair can make sense.

Repair before replacement, when it is the right approach

Chimney and fireplace work is not always a choice between “do nothing” and “replace everything.” Some concerns are maintenance. Some are focused repairs. Some need a closer inspection before a responsible recommendation can be made. And some conditions may require broader work because the accessible evidence shows a limited repair would not address the problem.

The only honest way to make that decision is to start with the condition. “Show people what you see, explain their options, and let them make the decision.” That has guided our work from the beginning.

Serving Missouri homeowners and properties

Mister Chimney serves the St. Louis and Kansas City metro areas. Homes and commercial properties in those regions can have different chimney systems, ages, building materials, and service histories, but they all deserve the same straightforward process: listen to the concern, inspect what is accessible, document conditions where helpful, explain the options, and complete the agreed work with care.

Availability is 24/7 because chimney and fireplace questions do not always arrive at convenient times. That does not mean we promise a same-day repair or make claims before seeing the system. It means you can reach a company that understands the work and can help you start the right conversation.

What has stayed the same since 1998

The van is newer now, and the tools have changed, but the reason for the company has not. Chimneys and fireplaces affect how a home is used. They deserve focused service, honest recommendations, and clear follow-through.

Whether you need chimney cleaning and sweeping, an inspection, masonry repair, leak evaluation, fireplace service, or help understanding a condition, Mister Chimney is here to explain the work in plain language and help you make an informed decision.
