Chimney Tuckpointing

Tuckpointing, or repointing, is the repair of the mortar joints between bricks. Mortar is sacrificial by design; it weathers faster than brick and is meant to be renewed. When joints have receded, cracked, or turned to powder, tuckpointing removes the failed mortar and packs in fresh, restoring both the seal and the strength of the wall.

Why mortar joints fail first

Mortar is softer than brick on purpose, so it absorbs movement and weathering rather than letting the brick crack. Over decades, rain, freeze-thaw, and age wear the joints back until they no longer keep water out or hold the brick firmly. You can often see it as gaps, crumbling lines, or mortar you can scratch out with a key.

On a chimney this matters more than on a wall at ground level, because the chimney is fully exposed on all sides and at the top.

What proper tuckpointing involves

The failed mortar is cut out to a consistent depth without damaging the brick, the joints are cleaned, and fresh mortar is packed in and tooled to match the existing profile. Mortar type and color are matched as closely as practical, both for appearance and so the new work behaves compatibly with the old brick.

Grinding too shallow or using the wrong mix causes the repair to fail early, so the details are worth doing right the first time.

Where it fits with other work

Tuckpointing is often paired with crown repair and waterproofing, because renewing the joints and then helping the masonry shed water addresses the moisture problem from both directions. On a chimney with widespread damage, repointing may be part of a larger masonry repair rather than a standalone job. We scope it based on how far the joint failure extends.

Signs your joints need repointing

  • Gaps or crumbling lines between the bricks
  • Mortar you can scratch out with a key
  • Receded joints that no longer sit flush
  • Daylight visible through the joints
  • Loose or shifting brick
  • Water entering through the masonry

Proper tuckpointing includes

  • Cutting out failed mortar to a consistent depth
  • Protecting the brick edges while grinding
  • Cleaning the joints before repacking
  • Packing in fresh mortar and tooling the profile
  • Matching mortar color and profile as closely as practical
  • Using a mix compatible with the existing brick

Serving St. Louis & Kansas City

We provide chimney tuckpointing across both of our home regions — the St. Louis metro, including the Metro East communities in Illinois, and the Kansas City metro on both the Missouri and Kansas sides — generally within about 65 miles of each city. Wherever you are, the approach is the same: we look at the actual system on site, explain what we find in plain terms, and lay out the options before any work begins. We use cautious, honest language about what we can and can't determine, and we don't quote a price or promise a fix for a problem we haven't assessed in person. Each metro has its own direct phone number, so you always reach the right place, and we're available around the clock to take your call and get you on the schedule.

Masonry scope depends on how far the deterioration reaches — a few joints or bricks versus a full section — how well replacement brick and mortar can be matched, access to the work, and whether the underlying cause of the damage also needs attention.

Keeping ahead of it

Masonry problems rarely improve on their own, so timing matters. Addressing weathered joints or a few spalled bricks now is usually a contained repair, while waiting until a section is loose or leaking often means a larger rebuild. Keeping water out with a sound crown, cap, and repellent slows the whole process down.

Questions

Chimney Tuckpointing FAQs

How do I know if my joints need repointing?

Gaps, crumbling or receded mortar, and mortar you can scratch out by hand are the signs. If you can see daylight or dig the joint with a key, it is due.

Will new mortar match the old?

We match color and profile as closely as practical. Old mortar can be hard to match exactly, and we choose a compatible mix so the repair performs correctly.

Is tuckpointing just cosmetic?

No. Sound joints keep water out and hold the brick together. Repointing is a structural and weatherproofing repair, not only an appearance fix.
